Today's launch of Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' is the latest chapter in the success story of Google's operating system. In less than 3 years, Android has emerged from relative anonymity into the mainstream and is now one of the major players in the smartphone market.
This article traces that development of Android; from humble, unstable beginnings, through rapid fragmentation of versions, to today's launch into the world of tablets.
But first, a brief history.........Google have always made a habit of taking a punt on small start-up companies and so many have fallen by the wayside or been assimilated into something much bigger, that very occasionally, the start of something big will be missed.
